Since the late 1990's when they first appeared, high definition (HD) TV sets have slowly grown in popularity and they have become far more affordable over the past 2 years. Before HD and Widescreen TV's the biggest CRT televisions you could buy in a standard high street store had a screen size roughly 28inches in 4:3 format and you would have to go to a specialist to get anything bigger and it would have cost a fortune.
Widescreen TV's then arrived on the scene on these were initially designed to allow you to watch movies in their original "letterbox" or panoramic format with little or none of the black strips above and below the picture and standard screen sizes were 28, 32 and 36 inches. It was obvious, however that these types of TV were becoming insanely heavy, and with customers wanting ever bigger and bigger screen sizes, a solution needed to be found.
Plasma and LCD TV's have gone a long way to solving this issue as they are significantly lighter than CRT and take up far less space as they are extremely thin in comparison. With this advancement in screen technology TV's began to be manufactured in even larger sizes never before seen, and it is not uncommon to see 50 and 60 inch size TV's for sale in many electrical stores. With televisions this size, it is like have your only mini cinema at home and it makes watching your favorite film a far more engrossing experience.
The most recent advances have been in picture quality, with high definition which brings more vibrant and crisp image and the latest screen improvements is 1080p, the "p" meaning progressively scanned and results in even sharper image quality. For the ultimate movie experience, a blu-ray player is a must as it enables you to play blu-ray movie titles that can produce pictures that are several times sharper than standard DVD titles.
