Don't give up on tubes...With flat panel TVs emerging nowadays such as plasmas and LCDs, most consumers are highly misinformed and believe that the quality of a flat panel is better than that of a tube (CRT) TV. This is not true at all. The image quality of a plasma or LCD TVs far inferior to a CRT, such as the Sony KD-34XBR970. Even worse, more and more people are buying these flat panel TVs as a 'status symbol' and do not understand true picture quality. Why do you think studios use CRT monitors during production and editing instead of a plasma TV? Most studios want the best, most accurate picture possible, so they use CRT monitors. The quality of the Sony KD-34XBR970 is much like a studio monitor, and surpasses all other displays regardless of cost. The dot pitch is so fine and the picture has so much realism to the point where all other displays look dull and muddy in comparison. Convergence and geometry is perfect out of the box, and the set looked fantastic. Its picture had depth and dimension, unlike the flat look of most plasma and LCD TVs. HD channels look amazing they are very real and are not overly enhanced. The Sony's on-board processing and DRC is perfect and does not make sources look pixelated at all. The picture is fine, clear, and has exceptional detail.

One caveat to remember: The set is shipped in 'Vivid' mode, which is meant to grab your attention in the stores with a bright picture but lacking in clarity. It is way too bright and much too sharp. You can see outlines and picture artifacts in this mode. If you keep the TV in Vivid mode, you are guaranteed to burn the tubes in no time and shorten the life of the TV. Also, the vivid mode is very inaccurate in color reproduction. I have my set calibrated in the 'Movie' mode, with a picture (white level) setting of 20/63 and a brightness (black level) setting of 30/63. Remember, it is very important to lower the 'picture' setting because it controls the amount of white light on the screen. If you do this, the tube will last a very long time and you will see an exceptional image. On the other hand, the 'brightness' setting controls the amount of dark areas you see in the picture. Turning this setting up will allow you to see more dark areas in a movie, but will not burn the tubes or impair image quality. An accurate image is better than a bright one.

Finally, the color decoder needs adjustment as it emphasizes red severely and makes people look reddish or tanned. If you change the 'color axis' setting from 'Default' to 'Monitor,' the colors will be much more accurate and vibrant. If you adjust this set properly and take good care of it, it will produce the best picture of any TV and will last a very long time. (My old XBR TV is 16 years old and still going.) I have a neighbor who spent $10,000 on a plasma TV and the picture quality is far worse than this set. What kind of TV would you buy? Is status symbol more important than image quality? Remember, that after reading this review, you are a much more educated consumer.

Sony Bravia M-Series KDL-19M4000 19-Inch 720p LCD HDTV Plus Accessory Kit with Flat Panel LCD/ Plasma Screen Cleaning Kit, Flat Panel TV Wall Mount, and HDMI-HDMI Gold Tipped Cable

After more than a year of saving up all my extra cash, I'm finally ready to get rid of my old bulky television and buy one of the latest flat-panel models. Usually I would just go out to a big electronics store, look around until I found something I liked, and then buy it on the spot. However, since this is such a major purchase for me, I'm planning on reading through as many plasma TV buying guides as I can find before I reach for my credit card.

A good plasma TV buying guide should be able to give me a lot of valuable information about the purchasing process. For instance, I don't know which features are absolute must-haves, and which ones I can do without, so I'm worried about paying extra for bells and whistles that I won't even use. Any decent plasma TV buying guide worth its salt will list all available features, along with detailed explanations of what each specific feature does. That way, I'll be able to decide for myself what's necessary and what isn't.

I've glanced through a few plasma TV buying guides that I found online, and saw that several topics tend to crop up over and over again. Many of the articles I've seen discuss such points as how to choose a screen size, how to install the new television, which peripherals and accessories are necessary, and which audio options to consider. It's going to take a few hours for me to carefully read through all of these plasma TV buying guides, but I think it'll be time well spent.

I've also noticed that a few of the online plasma TV buying guides out there contain pricing information, and actually point consumers to reputable websites that sell these products at significant markdowns. I hadn't really thought about purchasing my new television online, but some of the prices I've seen will be pretty hard to resist -- especially when some places are offering the latest flat-panel television models for 30 to 50 percent (or more) off the MRSP. With savings like that, I would be able to purchase a higher-end model, buy a bunch of home theatre equipment to go along with my new television, or simply pocket the difference. Those are the kinds of tough decisions that I don't mind having to make!

At any rate, I'm glad I've found several good plasma TV buying guides to help me decide which unit is the best fit for my needs and budget. Once I read through everything and take in as much information as possible, I'll be able to make my purchase with absolute confidence!

Thank you for reading, Ronnie Slade.

Hitachi P42H401 42-Inch HD1080 Plasma HDTV

The Hitachi P42H401 is a 42-inch plasma HDTV that brings extraordinary value with a unique HD1080 resolution standard.

Outstanding Picture Quality
With a unique 1280 x 1080 resolution, the P42H401 has over 1,000 lines of vertical resolution, allowing it to have a line-for-line match of incoming 1080i TV signals. While it is not the full 1080p resolution, it has a better resolution than 720p panels at a similar price. Picture quality is further enhanced, thanks to ClearWindow technology that reduces the visibility of a grid structure and maximizes brightness and clarity.

The P42H401 has 1080 lines of vertical resolution for a line-for-line match with 1080i TV signals. View larger. View back panel.

Timed swtiching allows picture settings to automatically adjust for changing ambient light conditions.
With the PictureMaster HD IV processor, all video inputs are scaled to match the native resolution of the unit to ensure a detailed picture no matter the source. For a better picture, the processor also performs noise reduction and other picture enhancements, such as dynamic contrast and histogram processing, automatic 3:2 film enhancement, and the capability for 16-bit color. Users can select between four HD and six SD aspect modes, and three preset color temperatures.

Well Connected
The P42H401 has three HDMI SimplayHD inputs (two rear, one front), the highest quality connection available that has both high definition video and audio in one cable. It also has two component video inputs, one S-Video input, four A/V inputs, and one RF/Antenna input. Outputs include one AV monitor output (fixed audio), one S-Video monitor output, and one optical digital audio output. You can connect the optical digital audio output with your home theater system to obtain surround sound when the built-in 20-watt speaker system isn't quite enough. The TV speaker can then be used as a center speaker.

There are built-in ATSC/NTSC tuners, both of which are combined into one tuning memory for seamless selection of channels, regardless of format. The unit is also QAM-digital-cable compatible.

Day and Night Differences
The P42H401 allows for three custom settings that match the picture settings with accompanying ambient light conditions so that you get the optimal picture and contrast settings no matter the hour. Additionally, the anti-reflective screen ensures a quality picture by reducing glare and deepening blacks for more contrast and detail. The television also features multiple screen saver and power saving modes for efficiency when not in use.

The P42H401 is backed by a 1-year parts and labor warranty.

Customer Review: Just a note about sound for Yue Zhang
Yue Zhang, I am not sure if you will read this review. But in any case, a general note about sound. This TV comes with so called "Perfect sound" set to on. I didn't know about that for a while. Out of the box the sound was VERY low. One day I thought it is not possible for a unit this good to have such a lousy sound. Then I found the "Perfect Sound" under the Setup-Audio, turned it off, and voila, I got great sound! Hope it helps folks who didn't thinker with Audio properties of this TV. As a more general note, I have the unit for more than a year, and I like it very much. Even though it is not true HD (1080P), the picture is great. Also, I leave in Austin area, and when it is on Air, it picks up 4-5 over the air HD channels with impeccable quality.
Customer Review: It's worth for that price
I purchased this item at a Sears for $699 +tax while open a Sears credit card last Thanksgiving. After 8 month, I feel< Good: 1. No complain for the money I paid. 2. Image is excelent. Bad: 3. Speekers are not load enough for some TY channels, even I scale to max. 4. No memory to keep last setting, such as sound volum and making black side (when you see 4:3 vedio).

Hitachi P50X902 50 inch Directors Series Plasma 1080p HDTV - (050585127074)

LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display, referring to the technology behind the increasingly popular flat panel monitors. An LCD monitor or TV is distinguishable from a traditional CRT monitor in its size. An LCD TV is sleek, thin, and dynamic as opposed to the heavy, bulky and box-like cube of a CRT. The reason is that there are only a couple of pieces of glass that are holding liquid crystals inside to create the picture.

LCD displays were initially invented to be used on laptop computers before the technology improved enough to make the jump to desktop monitors, and then again to televisions. Overall, an LCD monitor consists of five layers: a backlight, a sheet of polarized glass, a 'visor' of coloured pixels, a layer of liquid crystal solution, and a second polarized sheet of glass. By manipulating the orientations of crystals through precise electrical charges of varying degrees and voltages, the crystals act like tiny shutters, opening or closing in response to the stimulus, thereby allowing degrees of light that have passed through specific coloured pixels to illuminate the screen, creating the picture that you see.

So what is Liquid Crystal...besides an obvious contradiction in terms?
We know that there are three common states of matter: solid, liquid or gaseous. With solids, the molecules always maintain their orientation and stay in the same arrangement with respect to one another.

The molecules in liquids are completely the opposite: They can change their orientation and move anywhere within the liquid. But there are some substances that can exist in an in between state, that can be influenced by temperature, similar to that of a liquid and at the same time resembling a solid. This means that liquid crystals are neither a solid nor a liquid. That's how they ended up with their seemingly contradictory name.

So, do liquid crystals act like solids or liquids or something else?
It turns out that liquid crystals are closer to a liquid state than a solid. It takes a fair amount of heat to change a suitable substance from a solid into a liquid crystal, and it only takes a little more heat to turn that same liquid crystal into a real liquid.

Along with the in between state of the liquid crystal, there are some fluxuations in the performance of an LCD TV. As opposed to CRTs, LCDs cannot form multiple resolution images. LCD's can only produce clear images in their native resolution or a small fraction of it. The contrast ratio for LCD images is less than its CRT and plasma counterparts.

Due to their longer response time, LCDs may show ghosting and mixing when images change rapidly. The viewing angle of an LCD is narrower than a CRT or plasma display, thereby restricting the number of people who can conveniently view the image on the screen at one time. Image persistence is a common phenomenon with LCDs.

This is something comparable to screen burn-in on CRTs. As liquid crystal structure evolves, so will these difficulties with the picture qualities.

Amazing color reproduction

The incredible black reproduction of a Panasonic High-Definition Plasma TV results in impressive contrast and beautiful, natural colors. So you'll get warm, accurate skin tones, gorgeous greens, breathtaking blues and vivid reds. For color that's as rich and bold as life itself, look to a Panasonic Plasma TV.

Consistent brightness from any angle

A Panasonic Plasma combines anti-glare and anti-reflection technology with the natural light-emitting properties of plasma, to give you a super-wide viewing range with a crisp, beautiful image from almost any angle.

Smooth, graceful motion

When you're watching sports or movies with fast-motion graphics, you want a TV that can keep up with the action. With over 900 lines of moving picture, self-illuminating plasma displays eliminate afterimages in fast-action scenes. So whether you're watching a sporting event or an action-packed movie, you'll always get the most impressive viewing experience possible.

1,000,000:1 Contrast

The Panasonic's Real Black system (a pre-discharge suppression system) and improved panel production processes combine to reproduce outstanding blacks with superb contrast. Each image is richly expressive, from bright scense, like scorching desert landscapes, to dark cave scenes. Compare the image produced by conventional HDTV on the left to the Real Black image produced on the right

More Colors

Viera HDTVs support the xvYCC color profile (Extended YCC Colorimetry for Video Applications), or "x.v. color" for short. Standard RGB color space allows the display of a portion of the colors that are viewable to the human eye. The next generation "xvYCC" color space actually offers  an available range of colors that exceeds what human eyes can recognize.
  • Next-generation "xvYCC" color space supports 1.8 times as many colors as existing HDTV signals
  • Lets HDTVs display colors more accurately
  • Enables displays with more natural and vivid colors

Deep Color

deep color eliminates visible color banding Where x.v. color expands the available range of colors your HDTV can display, Deep Color increases the number of colors your HDTV can display within that range, for smoother transitions from color to color.
  • Lets HDTVs and other displays go from millions of colors to billions of colors
  • Eliminates on-screen color banding, for smooth tonal transitions and subtle gradations between colors
  • Enables increased contrast ratio
  • Can represent many times more shades of gray between black and white.

Connectivity

Viera flat panel HDTVs interact with an array of high-definition devices and services, making it easy for consumers to access and enjoy content as never before. As of 2008, Viera Link is compatible with Onkyo and Yamaha home theater systems.
Videos and stills recorded on SD cards can easily be viewed via the SD slots on Panasonic Blu-Ray Disc players and Viera HDTVs. Viera Link means easy connectivity via HDMI cables. Finally, consumers can easily operate their Blu-Ray Disc players, DVD recorders and home theater systems with a single remote control device.
SD Cards Viera Link

4 HDMI inputs to connect all of your devices directly to your television. Equipped with an RGB input terminal, VIERA can connect with your PC and serve as a large-screen monitor.
Easy connectivity with HDMI ports pc input

Long Life

long life Panasonic plasma panels are rated to last 100,000 hours, which is about 30 years of regular or 11 years of non-stop usage before the brightness of the display is halved.

Get Full HD with Blu-Ray Disc Players

Blu-Ray disc player A Panasonic 1080p plasma television is able to render 1920x1080 pixels, but standard DVDs have a resolution of just 720x480. Blu-ray discs output true 1080p High-Definition resolution and have a storage capacity ten times greater than standard DVDs, so no pixel gos to waste.

Customer Review: Panasonic doesn't care about its customers
I received this product a couple week ago. Within the first week, the remote control completely stopped working (and yes, I did try changing the batteries). I contacted Panasonic's "viera concierge" (a glorified name for customer service) immediately (on Dec 22, 2008), explained that this was a brand new TV and asked them to expedite a remote. Because the TV has no channel/volume controls directly on the set, the TV is basically useless without a remote. Well, two weeks later, I still have yet to receive my remote, and emails to the representative have gone unanswered. Basically, I am left with a useless TV. I don't believe Panasonic could do LESS to provide support for a $900+ TV.
Customer Review: Great Panasonic Plasma TV
I've long been a Panasonic fan. They make great and reliable electronics. So it wasn't hard for me to narrow down my choice of flat panels as I finally made a decision to buy. Wasn't a big fan of plasmas until this TV came along. Easy to set up out of the box, fantastic color, looks great in a well lighted room. Some initial difficulty in the set up menu...establishing separate component hook ups. But no big deal. I give the TV 4 out of five stars because I have never given a product 5 stars. Buy this TV -- you will not be disappointed. One last comment, Amazon shipped the TV in a very timely manner.

If you're like most people you've got many questions regarding home theater or you've tried to search for a plasma or LCD panel TV installer. Maybe you've wondered about how to wall mount a flat screen TV, how hide the wires, how to calibrate my surround sound system. The easiest solution is to find a home theater installer you can trust. But how do you find the right one for you?

Finding a Plasma or LCD Panel TV Installer

First, any home theater installation company should be licensed, bonded and insured to protect you from any mishaps, so be sure to ask for proof. Beyond that though, consider the following...

Are they part of the Better Business Bureau? Does the plasma or LCD panel TV installer you're considering have a clear record or a list of complaints? Do a little homework at the BBB. Although some unscrupulous companies might not have charges against them, it's still better to double-check.

Do they charge for in-house consultation? A reputable TV or surround sound installer will come to your home, offer suggestions and provide a quote at no charge. The reason? They make their money by providing great customer service and then doing quality work.

Did they 'trash talk' another installer? A reliable plasma or LCD panel tv installer spends their time showing potential clients why they are best and not waste that time by putting down another company or product.

Do they have references? Again, the BBB might not have all the details you expect. That means you should talk to their past clients to see what they have to say about their service experience.

What about appearances? First, look at their web site. If they have a web site that's a jumbled mess think of how your installation will look when they're done.

How do their employees look? A three-piece suit might be attractive, but you need a home theater installer and not a lawyer or accountant. Chances are, an 'over-dressed' person doesn't know much about the hands-on labor of home theater instillation. Equally as important though, you don't want someone who's unkempt and wearing disheveled clothing. Someone who takes pride in their appearance usually takes pride in the work they do. So while its true image isn't everything, you can usually judge the service you'll receive based on what you see.

Do they put their promises in writing? Contracts are important so make sure they spell out everything they plan to do, what it will include, and when it will be completed. That way there are no surprises. Should you need it, it's also your proof in court.

Before you decide on a home theater company be sure to consider all of these points. If you do, then it is possible to find the right plasma or LCD panel tv installer for you.
